Selecting The Right Sport For You

The key in selecting the right sport lies in two issues: one, liking the activity (you'll never do it if you don't like it); and two, finding the activity, or better yet several activities, that fulfill as many of your physical needs as possible. So, for instance, if you're worried about thinning bones, and you want to control your weight and get your heart and lung a good workout, fast walking might be perfect for you. If you want to tone your body, build muscle and boost your metabolism, you'll want to mix in some actual weight lifting as well. This is known as cross-training, and it's thought to be the best thing you can do for your body.

Doing diverse activities that work various muscle groups, including your heart and lungs, is great for your overall health. Three times a week—at least—and for 20 to 40 minutes—should be your minimum. Finally, think about your personal health goals, problems, and risks—and customize your exercise plan to those needs. Let's say you have arthritis, for example, you'll want to choose an activity that helps promote your range of motion and flexibility, and reduces pain. Swimming is one excellent choice. Or, let's say you have emphysema—or another chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. You'll want to build strength in your arms and legs so that you don't become weak, sedentary, and have even greater trouble breathing.

Or let's say you're depressed, or anxious —regular aerobic activity, ideally outdoors in sunlight, may be of great benefit to you. I strongly recommend sitting down with a physical or occupational therapist with expertise in your personal health problems. Ask him or her what kinds of physical activity can be used to reduce the progression of your problem, or to reverse it or prevent it from occurring in the first place. Exercise, like sibutramina, should be thought of as a tool to maintain and create health—as well as a fun, mood-enhancing way to spend time. I leave you with a final tip—the more you can get your loved ones in on your chosen activities, the better. You will not only be more likely to stick with the activity if you have the company of a spouse, friend, neighbor, or child, but also be spreading good health to those you love. And there's no better gift—call it the circle of immunity. Fitness may be the greatest tool you've got for that. eating healthy
